Mayan Pyramids of Tikal

Centuries ago, the city-state of Tikal was a powerful and complex society.  Today, all that remains of Tikal are the ancient pyramids built by the Mayans.  At its height, Tikal was home to over 60,000 Mayans and was a dominant force.

Researchers believe that Tikal was settled between 800 and 600 B.C.E. but that the major  pyramids were not constructed until after 250 C.E.  The Maya kept detailed calendars, so researchers have a fair idea of Tikal’s rich history.
