New Technologies Help the Hunt for Mayan Ruins

Using drones, archaeologists have been able to create a 3-D model of Mayan ruins hidden deep in the jungle.  Scientists got the idea to use drones after observing bats flying about the jungles in Guatemala; they realized that an aerial perspective could help them navigate the thick jungle foliage to locate ancient Mayan ruins.

The Mayan site, El Zotz, is located in northern Guatemala.  There are many unexcavated sites in this area, mainly because the dense and humid jungle makes it difficult to reach the Mayan ruins.  But thanks to this new technology, archaeologists will be able to locate, map, and one day excavate these priceless Mayan ruins.
