Why it’s worth the trip: The Coba ruins are just as haunting as other ancient Mayan ruins, yet the crowds tend to be much smaller.
Where to stay: If you want lively nightlife and lots of amenities, get a hotel in Playa del Carmen, Mexico-it’s less than two hours away.
Tulum has some impressive Mayan ruins of its own and offers more seclusion than Playa del Carmen.
How to get here: Take a tour bus from Playa del Carmen, or rent a car and explore on your own schedule.
