Researchers found that by using soil chemistry, as well as advanced remote sensing and satellite imagery, for the first time they are able to pinpoint where Maya farmers in Tikal, Guatemala carried out their most significant crop production. The location of the maize cultivated by the Maya is highly significant, in that it gives us an idea of how many people were being supported by the crop. Experts currently estimate that Tikal’s population was between 30,000 and 62,000 inhabitants, but this discovery could change that estimate.
