Mayan Calendars

The Mayan calendar is well-known due to the doomsday theories surrounding it, but did you know that the Mayan calendar is unique historically?  The Mayans were the first known people to measure time from a mythological beginning and keep historical record by it.

Calendars were often carved into stone monuments, although the length of time covered varied.  The Mayan calendars covered periods of time from 13 days to the famous “Long Count” calendar that ended on December 21, 2012.  The intricate Mayan calendars showcase the Mayans’ impressive command of astronomy and mathematics.
